Loaded News Coverage, Commentary Can Fuel Hate, Prejudice

Research by U. of Hawaii, U. of Exeter & National Hispanic Media Coalition indicates that media content can have a direct effect on hate and prejudice against minority groups. Accurate language can inform readers, while ethnically and religiously loaded language misleads readers and fuels hate and prejudice.

Dear friends and colleagues, as-salamu’alaikum.

According to the FBI, anti-Muslim hate crimes remain at high levels nationwide.

In just the past few months, we have seen news of mosques and Islamic schools across the nation being violently attacked. These are sober reminders that our organizations must be equipped to cut the risk of such events and be ready to respond when they do occur, in order to save precious lives.

In late 2012, CAIR-WA surveyed close to 40 mosques and Islamic schools across Washington state and found that 2 out of 3 do not have mechanisms in place and would not be ready at all if an attack were to happen.

The Community Safety Project is a simple 3-step project:

  1. Inspection of your mosque/school by a Dept. of Homeland Security expert
  2. Equipping your property according to recommendations
  3. Train your key people in response to common attack scenarios

The Community Safety Manual is an action-oriented document that is meant to be used by you to equip and train your key people.

It has been compiled from many expert sources, including our law enforcement partners at the local and federal levels, and other security professionals.
